What I've noticed is that many followers are simply using the "get the biggest follower base possible" strategy which drives them to follow pretty much anyone. Because of that, some followers will not even pay attention to your tweets - they weren't interested by your content in the first place, just in expanding their user base. Thanks for sharing! I manage the twitter account for the MIT $100K Business Plan Competition @mit100k and we have never tried to grow our followers "inorganically" (i.e. blasting out all kinds of tweets with the sole intent of developing a broader follower-base... equivalent to spam). We keep our tweets as relevant to the purpose of our organization as possible and I believe that has led to above-average response rates from our modest base of followers.
